Since 2018 the non-profit association ITINERANCE unites a community of artisans and changemakers in the Mediterranean.
Launched by Caroline Perdrix and Alexia Tronel, it’s an artistic project with a social impact.
The goal of ITINÉRANCE is to reintegrate craftsmanship and the meaning of clothing into the collective consciousness. We promote the transmission of this know-how through several means such as in the schools that educate, the museum institutions that keep them, as well as the ready-to-wear brands that sell them. Through these diverse initiatives, ITINÉRANCE supports local communities and participates in the safeguard of Mediterranean intangible heritage.
ITINÉRANCE highlights textile expertise through co-created clothing editions and documentation of this creative research process (photos, videos, podcasts). It's a transmission project that takes time to build strong relationships.
Our mission
Reinforce the pedagogy of the transmission through teaching
ITINÉRANCE values the pedagogy of Applied Arts schools and their role in the transmission of ancestral and contemporary know-how, as well as the importance of training new generations in current issues.
Support local
communities
ITINÉRANCE supports the crafts of female communities with limited access to the market and with largely varying profiles: ethnic minorities, refugees, the elderly, etc. Each edition offers a remunerative supplement: an introduction to professional life for the targeted communities and directly benefits their families..
Participate in the
safeguarding
of the intangible heritage
Intangible cultural heritage is a key factor in maintaining diversity. ITINÉRANCE collects through different media (video, photography, podcast) testimonies, rites, traditions, know-how and domestic arts around the Mediterranean.
Promote
Mediterranean crafts
ITINERANCE promotes local know-how. Each clothing edition features locally sourced suppliers and open access mapping for all. Our artisans are part of the Artisan Guild from Build Nest, a network of over 600 artisan entreprises with a footprint in more than 100 countries. Through the Guild, members receive grassroots business capacity building resources via Nest's digital programming.
Why the Mediterranean ?
The Mediterranean is a strategic crossroads for the textile industry. At the heart of these cross-border trades, we find the textile suppliers of the EU - Turkey (3rd), Morocco (8th), Tunisia (9th), Egypt(16th), Albania (17th) - and the main European sponsors - France, Italy and Spain.*
The diversity of traditional crafts in these countries is declining, replaced by industrial standards with a strong environmental and social impact. However, the craftsmen are true passers of memory. Unable to develop a viable economic model, some do not have enough orders and incredible know-how disappears. "More than 42 trades in the handicraft sector in Morocco are threatened due to "difficult conditions in which the craftsman practices"*
